Makassar (ANTARA) - Gynaecologist Prof Dr dr Nusratuddin Abdullah has revealed that obtaining IVF treatment is not straightforward, even with sufficient finances, as many factors need to be considered, especially for couples who are older.

“The most important thing to consider in IVF treatment is the age of the couple, especially the woman,” he said during a scientific seminar on reproduction as part of the grand opening of the Nusraya Fertility Center at the Four Points Hotel in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Sunday.

He explained that theoretically, women over 35 should be cautious about their reproductive factors, and if they are over 38, they should consider what steps to take.

“Especially for those over 38, it is advisable to undergo IVF treatment if they can afford it. Because as age increases, the number of egg reserves decreases, and the chances of pregnancy decrease,” he suggested to reporters.

Regarding people with certain diseases that hinder pregnancy, he said there is a disease called endometriosis. Endometriosis is a cyst, for example, that severely damages the eggs.

However, if medical tests reveal large cysts, surgery may be performed first. But the choice between surgery and IVF treatment depends on the egg reserve. “The older the age, the lower the reserve, so it is best to start the IVF program as soon as possible,” he said.

Regarding whether sperm quality in men is a major factor in pregnancy, Prof Nusra said that according to the most important criteria, the standard is the number and health of the sperm. “So, how many percent of the sperm are moving well. If it is considered less than 1 million good-moving sperm, then IVF may be an option for the husband,” he said.

Another gynaecologist, Prof Dr dr Tono Djuwantono, said that the main point of the scientific material presented was how people pay attention to their reproductive function. Because once there is a reproductive disorder, the cost increases.

“Therefore, we are holding this education at Nusraya not only for treatment but also for prevention. This means that society must be healthy. In fact, our goal is to encourage people to seek treatment locally, as many still go abroad, but we want to reduce that by providing services at the Nusraya Fertility Center,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr Amang Surya Priyanto added that reproductive conditions in each woman can vary even if they are the same age. A woman’s age is one of the important factors in determining pregnancy success.

Dr Binarwan Halim argued that one of the important points in IVF treatment is to stimulate the ovaries to obtain many eggs. Because the process of pregnancy is the same principle as planting a tree, there are superior seeds and good soil. In this case, the uterus and sperm.

“The fertilizer is ovarian stimulation. Proper fertilization will produce many high-quality eggs. If you get good seeds and plant them in the uterus, it will be very successful. Because 80 percent of the success of the program is determined by the seeds. I think Nusraya adopts many protocols that provide good stimulation,” he added.
