Guterres: BoP will not replace UN role in Gaza

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterress stated on Wednesday (16/09) that the Gaza Peace Council (BoP), led by the United States, will not replace the role of the UN in the Gaza Strip.

“The Peace Council does not replace the UN in Gaza,” Guterres said during a press conference when asked to what extent the Peace Council would take over the UN’s role in Gaza.

On 9 October 2025, Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas agreed to implement the first stage of a peace plan proposed by US President Donald Trump.

The agreement was mediated by Egypt, Qatar, the United States, and also Turkey.

The following day, a ceasefire came into effect in the Gaza Strip. Under the agreement, Israeli forces withdrew to an area referred to as the “Yellow Line,” but maintained control over more than 50 per cent of the Palestinian enclave.

At the end of July, the Peace Council announced that Hamas had agreed to a roadmap for implementing the subsequent stages of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

The plan includes the gradual handover of control of the Gaza Strip to the National Committee for Gaza Administration and the establishment of a special body to monitor violations committed by both Hamas and Israel.
