The lawyer for former Minister of Religious Affairs Yaqut Cholil Qoumas, Dodi S Abdulkadir, has spoken out regarding the change in his client’s detention status from KPK detention to house arrest. Yaqut was detained by the KPK after being named a suspect in the alleged corruption case involving the Hajj quota.

Dodi stated that he was unaware of the specific reasons and considerations behind the KPK’s approval of the family’s request to switch Gus Yaqut’s detention. However, he assured that the process for changing the detention has been carried out in accordance with applicable procedures.

“Of course, the KPK knows best about the considerations for determining house arrest for Mr Yaqut. All procedures for the switch have been fulfilled in accordance with the provisions,” Dodi said when contacted on Monday (23/3).

Dodi emphasised that his client will remain cooperative in undergoing the legal process at the KPK. He said Gus Yaqut will respect and follow every stage or legal process.

“As a note, Mr Yaqut has always been cooperative and supports the KPK’s law enforcement efforts. Gus Yaqut has consistently been cooperative and complied with legal provisions, including the legal process at the KPK, which is why the legal team is confident that Gus Yaqut will carry out all assigned obligations,” he stated.

Previously, the KPK provided an official explanation regarding the change in Yaqut’s detention status from KPK Detention Centre (Rutan) to house arrest. KPK Spokesperson Budi Prasetyo emphasised that the switch in detention type is temporary.

Budi explained that the investigators’ decision took effect from Thursday night (19/3/2026), following a request submitted by the family of the suspect in the alleged 2024 Hajj quota corruption case.

“It is true that the investigators have switched the detention type for suspect YCQ to house arrest since last Thursday night. This switch was based on a request from the family on 17 March 2026,” Budi said in his official statement to the media on Sunday (22/3/2026).

Budi stated that the decision underwent a thorough legal review. The legal basis used is Article 108 paragraphs (1) and (11) of Law Number 20 of 2025 on the Criminal Procedure Code (KUHAP).

That article regulates the types of detention places and the investigators’ authority to switch detention status based on certain considerations.

“We assure that the temporary detention switch process complies with the provisions and procedures for investigation and detention of a suspect,” Budi said.

Even while under house arrest, Budi assured that Yaqut remains under legal authority monitoring. The anti-corruption agency has deployed personnel for security and continuous strict supervision.

“During the implementation of this detention switch, the KPK continues to conduct close monitoring and security for the individual,” he stressed.
