Gus Lilur Hopes 35th NU Congress Produces a Unifying Leader

NU requires a leader capable of uniting, not increasing fragmentation. NU needs a figure who is calm, simple, and able to act as a glue for all elements of the jam’iyah (organisation), said Gus Lilur in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday.

According to him, the history of NU has produced several Rais Aam figures remembered for their exemplary leadership, such as Kiai Haji Ahmad Siddiment and KH Sahal Mahfudz.

He stated that both figures were known not only for their depth of knowledge but also for their simple lifestyles, calm demeanour, and ability to maintain unity within the NU environment.

“That is the kind of leadership NU needs today,” he added.

Previously, the General Chairman of PBNU, Yahya Cholil Staquf, expressed hope that the Muktamar, as the organisation’s highest forum, would not be used as a stepping stone towards the 2029 General Election.

Yahya stated that this message has been repeatedly conveyed throughout his nearly five-year leadership at PBNU. Consequently, PBNU will strive to ensure that the Muktamar is not utilised as an arena for electoral political interests.

Regarding the nomination mechanism within the Muktamar, he explained that there is no obligation for candidates to resign from structural positions, including those within the government. However, there are provisions regarding the prohibition of holding dual positions that must be adhered to.
