Gus Ipul Inspects Construction of People's School in Deli Serdang, Set to Complete in July 2026
“I am truly grateful that the construction process is running smoothly, and this permanent building will later accommodate more than 1,000 primary, secondary, and high school students,” said Gus Ipul in a written statement on Friday (10/4/2026). He hopes that by the end of the new academic year in July 2026, it will be able to accommodate even more People’s School students than in 2025. The permanent People’s School building in Deli Serdang is being built on a 7.06-hectare plot of land. Its facilities include dormitories, classrooms, a dining hall, a place of worship, and a football field. “I envision that once there are 1,000 students studying here (across primary, secondary, and high school levels), this will become the Integrated People’s School of Deli Serdang,” he stated. Gus Ipul added that the construction of permanent People’s School buildings is also underway at 100 other locations across Indonesia, each involving around 500 workers. “That means today, more than 50,000 workers are collaborating to build permanent People’s School buildings throughout Indonesia,” he revealed. Gus Ipul expressed thanks to President Prabowo Subianto, who initiated the free education programme for children from impoverished families, whom he referred to as the invisible people. “This is a noble effort by the President to provide quality education, and it is hoped that graduates of the People’s Schools will become agents of change. Some can continue to higher education, while others can directly become skilled workers,” explained Gus Ipul. He further added that after graduation, they are expected to become agents of change for themselves, their families, society, and Indonesia’s progress in the future. Meanwhile, Kurniawan, Head of the Strategic Infrastructure Implementation Unit for North Sumatra under the Ministry of Public Works, stated that there are five permanent People’s School buildings under construction in North Sumatra, namely in Medan City, Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, South Tapanuli, and Padang Sidempuan. “Overall progress is good. We are targeting 20 July (2026) in line with the Minister of Public Works’ instructions, hopefully it can already be used by then,” he said. Project Manager for the Construction, Donny Kesuma, explained that the development is divided into two zones. The first zone includes buildings for primary, secondary, and high schools, as well as four dormitory buildings. The second zone consists of four dormitory buildings, two teachers’ apartments, and one football field. “This week’s progress is around 17 percent, and we are trying to work on it faster,” Donny clarified.
