The Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has addressed the increasing discussion surrounding Religious Affairs Minister Prof. KH. Nasaruddin Umar as a potential leader ahead of the NU Congress. According to PBNU Secretary-General Saifullah Yusuf, known as Gus Ipul, Nasaruddin has a significant chance of garnering support due to his organisational track record within NU. The statement was made in response to media questions about prominent names considered potential candidates for PBNU Chairman at the upcoming congress. Gus Ipul explained that, looking at NU’s leadership history over recent decades, the position of Katib Aam has often served as a pathway to the organisation’s top leadership. ‘Prof Nasaruddin Umar previously served as Katib Aam during the era of KH Hasyim Muzadi. Based on the statistics and experience so far, he is very much a potential candidate,’ Gus Ipul said after inspecting preparations for the National Alim Ulama Conference and NU Conference at Al Falah Ploso Islamic Boarding School in Kediri Regency on Tuesday. He stressed, however, that he was not campaigning for any specific name. He acknowledged that Nasaruddin Umar’s name is one of the most frequently mentioned in various NU forums and meetings across several regions. ‘When I travel around to several regions, Prof Nasaruddin’s name is indeed mentioned quite often. That is what I hear from various circles. The rest will certainly be determined by the dynamics that develop ahead of the congress,’ he stated. Gus Ipul elaborated that several previous PBNU chairmen shared similar backgrounds. Starting from KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), KH Hasyim Muzadi, to KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, all had held the position of Katib Aam before being elected to lead PBNU. ‘Looking back over roughly the last 40 years, three previous PBNU chairmen had served as Katib Aam. This shows that the position has a strong track record in producing NU leaders,’ he said. Beyond Katib Aam, Gus Ipul mentioned that the position of PBNU Secretary-General and Chairman of PWNU East Java are also strategic roles that have frequently produced central figures within NU. He cited KH Idham Chalid, who served as PBNU Secretary-General before becoming Chairman, while KH Hasyim Muzadi ascended to national NU leadership after leading PWNU East Java.
