Gus Fahrur: Islamic New Year a Momentum to Strengthen Faith, Morals, and Brotherhood

As the Islamic New Year begins, the chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU), KH Ahmad Fahrur Rozi, has called on Muslims to use this momentum for introspection and self-improvement. According to Gus Fahrur, the most needed form of hijrah today is a change in attitude towards unity, social awareness, and a spirit of building a better life.

Gus Fahrur stated that Muslims need to make this moment a means of muhasabah and self-correction. The hijrah most required today is not merely a physical relocation, but a shift in attitude from blaming one another to strengthening one another, from spreading hatred to spreading goodness, and from a consumptive mindset to hard work and self-reliance.

“Amid economic challenges, the rapid flow of social media, and various social changes, Muslims need to strengthen their faith, morals, brotherhood, and care for others, especially the weak and those facing hardship,” Gus Fahrur told Republika on Monday (15/6/2026).

Gus Fahrur emphasised that national unity must be maintained through a spirit of justice, deliberation, and mutual respect. Differences should not become a reason for division, but rather a strength to jointly build a better Indonesia.

Earlier, Religious Affairs Minister KH Nasaruddin Umar invited Muslims to make the 1448 Hijriyah New Year a momentum to strengthen brotherhood, spread love, and bring peace to community life. The message was delivered during an event welcoming the Islamic New Year 1448 Hijriyah with the theme “Strengthening Love for Islam and Islam of Love” at the Al Jabbar Mosque in Bandung City on Tuesday (9/6/2026), attended by thousands of worshippers from various regions in West Java.
