Gus Dur's stance on drug trafficking
Gus Dur's stance on drug trafficking
From Suara Karya
President Abdurrahman Wahid, or Gus Dur, is apparently extremely serious about fighting the problem of narcotics and prohibited drugs. This was evident from his statement that he agreed drug traffickers should receive capital punishment because the problem of drugs has penetrated deep into the life of the nation.
I think the President's stance has its reasons and deserves to receive support from us all. Are we resigned to our school-age children using drugs? I do not think so. Drug trafficking, especially in large cities, causes us great concern. It has gone beyond the threshold of tolerance. Can we tolerate the fact that drugs have entered elementary schools? What will become of our nation if underaged children use drugs?
Gus Dur's firm stance should grab the attention of all parties, especially law enforcers. Drug trafficking must be eradicated. Only adequate law enforcement can prevent and wipe out drug trafficking in the country. The participation of the whole community is no less important in fighting the problem of drugs.
