Gus Dur's diplomacy
Gus Dur's diplomacy
From Warta Kota
As he has often done before, former president Abdurrahman
"Gus Dur" Wahid has recently -- without fanfare nor publicity --
visited a number of European countries to help improve
Indonesia's image abroad.
Interestingly, before he was elected president, Gus Dur lashed
out at Australian prime minister John Howard for wounding the
dignity of the Indonesian people. The relations between the two
figures was sour until Gus Dur rectified the situation when he
became president.
During his recent visit to Europe, Gus Dur met French
president Jacques Chirac and explained to his host that the
majority of Indonesian Muslims were moderate.
Although Gus Dur usually does not worry about whether he is
recognized for his efforts, his diplomacy abroad deserves full
support. It will significantly contribute to Indonesia's position
in international relations.
