Gus Dur's bravery

From Rakyat Merdeka

I hail and admire President Abdurrahman Wahid's bravery in his statement quoted in the media recently. He said to a gathering of prominent community and religious leaders in Merauke, "If there is a country which tries to divide the unitary state of Indonesia, we are ready to go to war". A most fitting statement that does not need to be put in doubt.

The statement implied that no country should try to interfere with Indonesia's internal affairs by whatever means.

President Wahid, or Gus Dur, also said that Indonesia would not hesitate to enter a confrontation (war) with any country which endeavored to assist other movements or regions within Indonesia.

The President's statement is certainly meant to deter foreign countries who might consider giving funds, weapons or other forms of aid to insurgents who wish to impair the nation's sovereignty. It is also directed to the nation's youths as well as the entire population in hopes of inspiring them to uphold the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia.

Why is it necessary to make the statement? It is very important because otherwise we will have another situation like East Timor, a condition resulting from outside pressure and deceit.

It should not recur in Aceh, Irian Jaya, Riau and elsewhere. The President's statement will make other countries think twice if they plan to interfere with Indonesia's internal affairs.

The statement also constitutes moral support for the strength and determination of the national defense in its maintenance of our sovereignty in the eyes of the international world.
