Gus Dur to meet with Clinton

BALTIMORE, Maryland (JP): President Abdurrahman Wahid is
scheduled to meet with U.S. President Bill Clinton at the White
House, Washington D.C., on Monday (local time), officials said.

Officials in the presidential entourage said Abdurrahman is
scheduled for a 30-minute meeting with Clinton on Monday afternoon.

A schedule distributed on Sunday to journalists traveling
with the President on his U.S. visit says that before the meeting,
Abdurrahman will first undergo a medical checkup at the John
Hopkins Hospital here on Monday morning.

The schedule also says that after the meeting, Gus Dur, as the
President is popularly called, is scheduled to return to the
hospital to undergo a second phase of his medical checkup.

The President is then scheduled to leave for New York on
Monday evening.

The likelihood that Abdurrahman would meet with Clinton was
first conveyed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Alwi Shihab in Salt
Lake City on Saturday.

Abdurrahman said during the meeting that he plans to ask the
American anticorruption body to assist with investigations into
the wealth of former top Indonesian officials.

The Indonesian Attorney General's Office is currently
conducting an investigation into the alleged abuse of power by
former president Soeharto, which reportedly allowed certain
people to amass wealth by the issuance of various rulings.

Abdurrahman said earlier that the information obtained from
the research agency would be used as evidence to bring former
state officials to court.(byg)
