Gus Dur supporters hit the streets

PURWOKERTO, Central Java: Some 200 supporters of President
Abdurrahman Wahid from Banyumas took to the streets here on
Tuesday, burning the Golkar Party flag.

The President's supporters also demanded House of
Representatives Speaker Akbar Tandjung and People's Consultative
Assembly Speaker Amien Rais stop their efforts to unseat
Abdurrahman.

"We call on the two politicians to take our demand into
consideration for the sake of the nation," Muchson, one of the
protesters, said.

According to Muchson, the protesters were prepared to go to
Jakarta to defend the President if Amien and Akbar continued in
their efforts to topple Abdurrahman.

"As long as Golkar members are in the administration, things
will remain chaotic," Muchson said.

According to sources, Abdurrahman's supporters plan to hold
more rallies on Wednesday. (45)
