Gus Dur meets Susilo

Former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid met with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the latter's private residence in Cikeas, Bogor on Friday night to convey his concern about the issues of Aceh, Papua and controversial edicts delivered by the Indonesian Ulema Council.

Gus Dur's daughter Yeni Wahid said both national figures agreed that violence in the name of a certain religion or the state was intolerable.

During the meeting, Susilo briefed Gus Dur on the results of the Aceh peace deal that will be signed on Aug. 15 in Helsinki. Both leaders were of the opinion that the special autonomy for Papua should be upheld. The special autonomy was granted during Gus Dur's administration, which also initiated peace talks with Aceh rebels. -- JP
