Guruh disappoints admirers

PALU, Central Sulawesi: Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan) campaigner Guruh Soekarnoputra disappointed party supporters here by missing a campaign rally on Wednesday.

Local secretary of the party branch here Imran Saiman told the audience who packed the Abadi Talise soccer field that Guruh, one of founding president Sukarno's sons, failed to show up because he had to address party supporters somewhere on Java at the same time.

Imran said he was afraid Guruh's appearance would attract a huge crowd to the rally, and subsequently cause security problems. A clash involving supporters of the party exploded at the same place last week which Imran said had tarnished the party's image.

In his speech, Imran told the crowd to maintain their cool in the run-up to and during election day on Monday, Antara reported.
