Gunungkidul Regency Opens New Car Free Day Location Following Relocation
Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Gunungkidul Regency Government, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), has officially opened a new location for Car Free Day (CFD), or Motor Vehicle-Free Day, following its relocation from the Alun-Alun Wonosari area.
Speaking in Gunungkidul on Sunday, the Regent of Gunungkidul, Endah Subekti Kuntariningsih, stated that the new CFD location is situated on Jalan Brigjen Katamso-Jalan KH Agus Salim, Wonosari District, whereas it was previously held in the Jalan Masjid and Alun-Alun Wonosari area.
“This relocation is part of the government’s commitment to providing a healthy, safe, and comfortable public space for all levels of society,” she said.
According to the Regent, the move is based on valid regulations through the enactment of Gunungkidul Regent Regulation Number 1s of 2026 regarding the Amendment to Regent Regulation Number 9 of 2022 concerning the Implementation of Motor Vehicle-Free Day.
“Today, we are seeing extraordinary participation at this new location,” she noted.
In addition to serving as a space for exercise, she believes the CFD also acts as a social space that can accommodate Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to sell their goods in accordance with existing regulations, thereby driving the local economy.
“Let us provide space for local products to grow. Let us support our MSMEs, farmers, and culinary entrepreneurs. When the community’s economy moves, the regional economic strength also grows,” she said.
She mentioned that efforts to boost the economy through the development of the CFD align with the development priorities in the Regional Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMD) 2025-2029, as well as the message from Indonesia’s first President, Soekarno, regarding economic patriotism.
“We will continue to evaluate and develop the Motor Vehicle-Free Day in accordance with the dynamic needs of the community,” she added.
She expressed hope that tourists visiting Gunungkidul would stop by the new CFD location to enjoy local cuisine and purchase MSME products as provisions for their return journeys or trips to other tourist attractions.
“The Motor Vehicle-Free Day is expected to provide dual benefits for public health and the sustainability of regional tourism,” she said.
One of the CFD traders, Eni Sudaryana, assessed that the new CFD location is quite representative and larger than the previous site.
“It is more spacious, and MSMEs are no longer crowded together,” they said.
Furthermore, Eni also noted an overall increase in the number of CFD visitors, which will automatically impact the income of MSME operators.
“The place is more organised and the visitors are more numerous,” they added.
