Gunungkidul Regency Explores Cooperation with South Korea to Absorb Labour

Yogyakarta (ANTARA) - The Gunungkidly Regency Government, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), is establishing cooperation with South Korea to open opportunities for absorbing workers from Gunungkidul in the agricultural and fisheries sectors.

Han Sang Jae, a representative of a South Korean Cooperation Association, stated in Gunungkidul on Sunday that the cooperation has been discussed through an audience with the Gunungkidul Regency Government and will eventually be realised through a labour absorption programme with a well-developed scheme.

“This cooperation will be implemented through a Government-to-Government (G2G) or ‘regent-to-regent’ scheme to ensure the legality and safety of the workers,” he said.

During the discussion, Han conveyed that South Korea requires thousands of seasonal workers under eight-month employment contracts via a seasonal worker scheme.

“The initial quota planned for Gunungkidul Regency is 100 people, divided into 50 people for the agricultural sector and 50 people for the fisheries sector,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Regent of Gunungkidul, Endah Subekti Kuntariningsih, stated that the audience with the representative of the South Korean Cooperation Association and a representative from Diponegoro University, Prof. Dr. Bambang Waluyo Hadi Eko Prastono, took place at the Gunungkidul Regent’s Official Residence, Wonosari, on Sunday (30/8).

“This cooperation is a strategic solution for the high number of high school and vocational school graduates in Gunungkidul who do not continue to university,” she said.
