Heavy rain caused a retaining wall on the new Clongop road in Plasan, Watugajah, Gedangsari, Gunungkidul, to collapse overnight. The Gunungkidul–Klaten link via Wedi-Gedangsari was cut off as landslide debris covered the road.

The landslide occurred on Tuesday night, 3 March, at about 21:00 WIB. There were no fatalities.

‘There were no casualties, but a retaining wall 30 metres long and 15 metres high collapsed, and the landslide debris blocked the new Clongop road,’ said Edy Winarta, Head of Emergency and Logistics at BPBD Gunungkidul, quoted by Detik Jogja on Wednesday, 4 March 2026.

He noted that around 80 per cent of the road connecting Wedi, Klaten, Central Java with Gedangsari, Gunungkidul could not be traversed. Given current weather conditions, BPBD Gunungkidul warned of potential secondary landslides.

‘Therefore, the main connecting road from Wedi, Klaten to Gedangsari, Gunungkidul is temporarily closed entirely,’ he added.

Officials were still conducting assessments at the site. BPBD was also awaiting heavy equipment to clear the landslide debris.
