Gunungkidul govt to resettle fishermen

YOGYAKARTA: The Gunungkidul administration will conduct a transmigration program aimed at resettling local fishermen to areas near their work in the regency.

Wagiran, chief of the local manpower and transmigration ministry office, said here on Tuesday that during the first phase, the local administration would relocate 100 fishermen living in Kanogoro village to a coastal area in Saptosari subdistrict.

"We will develop low-cost but decent housing for the fishermen in the subdistricts where they are fishing," he said, adding that the resettlement would start in January 2002.

He said the resettlement program would cost Rp 2 billion, paid for by the central government.

He also said his office sent 50 families to join a resettlement program in South Sumatra last month. --Antara
