PAPUA NEW GUINEA: A bodyguard for the speaker of PNG's parliament and the daughter of a Cabinet minister were wounded by one or more gunmen who opened fire on their vehicles over the weekend, it was reported in Port Moresby on Monday.
Parliamentary speaker Bill Skate, a former prime minister, was being driven through the city in his official car late on Friday when the first shot was fired, striking his bodyguard in the arm, Skate told the Post Courier newspaper.
Minutes later, another shot was fired in the same area and hit a car being driven by the wife of Minister of Petroleum and Energy Sir Moir Avei.
The couple's 12-year-old daughter was wounded in the abdomen, the newspaper said. Hospital officials said both victims underwent surgery and were recovering. --AFP
