Gunawan moved to Cipinang prison

After being treated at Soekanto Police Hospital in Kramat Jati,
East Jakarta, for around 10 days, defendant Gunawan Santosa was
moved to Cipinang Penitentiary, East Jakarta, on Friday at 1 a.m.

Gunawan's lawyer Alamsyah Hanafiah said on Friday that his
client was moved after being questioned at the Central Jakarta
Police Headquarters on Thursday. The reason for incarcerating
Gunawan in Cipinang instead of Salemba Penitentiary, where he was
kept before his foiled escape, was due to safety concerns.

"It is possible that inmates in Salemba would have antipathy
toward him for his escape attempt," he said.

Alamsyah pointed out that Gunawan had not completely recovered
from the gunshot wound he gained in his escape attempt from the
paddy wagon carrying him from Salemba Penitentiary to the North
Jakarta District Court where he was scheduled to stand trial.

"I have asked the Cipinang warden to give him a special room
so he can receive medical attention," the lawyer said.

Warden Bambang Sumardiono confirmed the request.

"We have put him in solitary confinement in Block 3E," he said
as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

During the questioning, Gunawan kept answering "I don't know"
or "I don't remember" on how the .32 caliber Baretta pistol came
into his possession and how he was shot in the midriff.

"But if we asked him about his family, he remembered clearly,"
said Central Jakarta Police chief of detectives Comr. Ch.
Patoppoi.

According to Patoppoi, Gunawan was discharged from the
hospital because the doctors said that his condition had
improved.

The police were reported by Gunawan's lawyers to the National
Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) on Wednesday for their
inhumane treatment of Gunawan.

Gunawan's hands and feet were shackled to the bedposts while
being treated at the hospital. The lawyers said that their client
did not receive proper medical treatment for his wound.

Police claimed that Gunawan had to be restrained as they
feared he would attempt another escape.

Gunawan was charged with premeditated murder of his ex wife's
father, PT Aneka Sarana Bakti (Asaba) president director
Boedyharto Angsono, and his bodyguard, a member of the Army's
Special Forces (Kopassus).
