Gulkarmat extinguishes rubbish fire in Kampung Bahari, North Jakarta

The North Jakarta and Seribu Islands Fire and Rescue Service (Gulkarmat) successfully extinguished a rubbish fire that occurred on Jalan Kampung Bahari, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Thursday afternoon.

“The fire is suspected to have been caused by a carelessly discarded cigarette butt,” said Gatot Sulaeman, Head of Operations at North Jakarta and Seribu Islands Gulkarmat, in Jakarta on Thursday.

He said that according to witness accounts, residents saw smoke rising from a rubbish pile along the railway crossing, which was suspected to have been caused by a cigarette butt.

“Because the smoke was disturbing the surrounding environment, one resident contacted the Tanjung Priok sub-district task force to extinguish the fire,” he said.

The fire was reported by residents at 12.43 p.m. Western Indonesia Time, and the team immediately moved to the location to handle the incident. Officers began extinguishing the fire at 12.56 p.m. and the fire was successfully extinguished at 1.29 p.m.

“A total of 20 personnel and four fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire,” said Gatot.

He said the object that caught fire was a rubbish pile belonging to the Environmental Agency covering an area of 25 square metres.

“Alhamdulillah, the fire has been successfully brought under control by officers and the extinguishing status has ended,” he said.
