Gulf confirms gas find in south central Sumatra

CALGARY (Reuter): Gulf Canada Resources said on Tuesday it completed a well in Indonesia that confirmed an extension of a gas-rich geological structure previously estimated to harbor 900 billion cubic feet of proved and probable reserves.

Gulf Canada said the well, Tetangga-1, confirmed the extension of the Sumpal structure in its Corridor Block Production Sharing Contract area in south central Sumatra.

The wildcat well penetrated a minimum of 113 metres (371 feet) of gas column which Gulf calculated as having about 27 metres (90 feet) of net gas pay, it said.

Tetangga-1, located about 4.0 km (2.5 miles) from the successful Sumpal-2 well drilled in 1996, was cased in preparation for an extended production test, expected to start in late April, it said.

Reserves of 3.9 trillion cubic feet of gas from Tetangga and Sumpal had been classified as possible, Gulf Canada said.

Gulf Canada has 54 percent working interest in the Corridor Block PSC. Its partners include Talisman Energy Inc with 36 percent and Indonesia state oil company Pertamina with 10 percent.

The company on Tuesday also reported results from its Alur Siwah-9 development well and Mengoepeh-1 wildcat oil well.

Alur Siwah-9, on Block A PSC in North Sumatra, in which Gulf Canada has a 50 percent stake, was drilled to 2,978 metres (9,770 feet) and encountered 183 metres (600 feet) of net gas pay, exceeding expectations by 30 per cent, Gulf said.

During testing, the well flowed 41 million cubic feet per day of raw gas -- with 24 percent carbon dioxide -- through a 1.25- inch choke. The well confirmed the deliverability of the Alur Siwah field, which was slated to be the main field in the Block A gas project, it said.

The Mengoepeh-1 well, the first discovery in the 1.7 million acre Tungkal Block PSC where Gulf Canada has 100 percent interest, flowed oil at a maximum rate of 1,296 barrels per day through a one-inch choke from a 22.5 metre (74 foot) interval, the company said.

Gulf said it expected to start step-out drilling in August after completing two more wildcat wells on the block.
