Guidance on Treating Fever in Babies Under Three Months
Jakarta (ANTARA) –
Indonesian Paediatric Society (IDAI) Central Executive Board chair Dr Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, a paediatric cardiology specialist, said fever in babies under three months old needs to be taken seriously, as it may indicate an infection requiring prompt treatment.
Because a baby’s immune system is still developing, he said, symptoms that may signal an infection need to be addressed immediately, even if the baby still appears active.
“If a baby’s temperature reaches 38°C or higher, parents should take the baby to a doctor or health facility immediately for an examination, even if the baby still seems active or is willing to breastfeed,” he told ANTARA on Monday.
He advised parents to take a baby with a fever to a health facility even if the baby still appears well and their temperature has fallen.
“While on the way to a health facility, parents can continue breastfeeding, dress the baby comfortably and avoid swaddling them too heavily,” he said.
He warned parents not to give babies medicines without guidance from a medical professional, or to try traditional remedies to relieve their illness.
He added that parents should also avoid giving babies foods and drinks that may be unsafe, such as raw eggs.
In a written statement, Piprim said raw or undercooked eggs may contain Salmonella bacteria, which can cause infection in babies.
IDAI urged parents and families to follow health workers’ recommendations on infant care and feeding, and to take babies to a health facility immediately if they notice any warning signs.
