Guess What? Winny Sutowo

The woman who opened an exhibition of contemporary glass fuse
works on Tuesday lingered around some of the beautiful pieces,
but the Rp 4 million price tags were not the only constraint on
her mind.

"Where would I put them? My five-year-old plays basketball in
the house," said Winny Sutowo, wife of businessman Pontjo Sutowo.
Her son, Prasetyo, has smashed a number of crystals in their home
in Menteng, Central Jakarta. However, Sutowo hasn't driven him
outside to play.

"You can't tell kids to stop playing," she said, as she eyed a
blue bowl with mauve circular stripes named Untitled by the Dutch
artist Frank van den Ham.

Sutowo says she is a "hundred percent" housewife because "we
had a deal that I would stay home and he would take care of the
business." Six children, the eldest 24, would indeed demand full
time parenting although charity work also takes up some of her
time.

So, while her friends picked up this piece and that at the
display at the Hilton Executive Club, Sutowo merely joined in the
admiring commentaries and the queries of what to do with the
pretty glass. One person assured a long dish could be a pencil
holder, another said a small bowl could hold marbles. Sutowo's
contribution was advice on how to wear the glass butterflies as
accessories. (anr)
