Guard shot dead in Depok

DEPOK: A security guard was shot dead by four unidentified men who were allegedly trying to steal a motorcycle in front of a boarding house on Jl. Margonda Raya, Depok, on Friday evening at around 7:30 p.m.

Eyewitness Aang, a parking attendant, said that he told the guard, Ateng, 35, that four men were behaving suspiciously and seemed to be intending to steal a motorcycle at a nearby massage parlor.

Ateng, after receiving the information, approached the men and asked them what they were doing in the area. Suddenly, one of the four men shot him.

"I heard two shots. Pak Ateng fell to the ground while the four men ran in the direction of Jakarta," said another eyewitness, Jamal.

Ateng, who had worked at the boarding house for eight years, was rushed to Harapan Hospital in Depok but died on the way.

Jamal identified the suspects as well-built and wearing black suits.

Chief of Beji Police subprecinct, Adj. Comr. Budiono, said that he had deployed his officers to investigate the case.

"Some officers are pursuing the criminals. They seem to be familiar with the area," he said. -- JP
