Guangxi seeks to involve Indonesia in ASEAN automotive supply chain
Beijing (ANTARA) – The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, seeks to include Indonesia in the high-tech automotive supply chain in ASEAN via SAIC-GM-Wuling (SGMW).
Guangxi and the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) industry will continue to expand cooperation with Indonesia and ASEAN countries, particularly in applying artificial intelligence, product innovation and supply-chain development, said Yao Zuoping, Deputy General Manager of SGMW, in Beijing on Friday, 6 March, during the Guangxi Open Day, part of the annual Chinese Parliament ‘Two Sessions’ held 4–12 March 2026.
Guangxi, a provincial-level region in southern China bordering Southeast Asia, is the base for SAIC-GM-Wuling, the parent of Wuling Motors, a maker of electric vehicles that has entered Indonesia since 2015.
“Indonesia is one of the main automotive markets in ASEAN with a large population and a growing economy. In 2017 we opened our manufacturing plant in Indonesia with an investment of around one billion US dollars,” Yao said.
He noted that the Air EV model is the first NEV to be produced locally in Indonesia, with Wuling’s market share around 29.8 percent.
Going forward, Wuling plans a number of development steps in Indonesia and the Southeast Asia region, including launching two new vehicle models with internal combustion, pure electric and hybrid powertrain options.
The company also plans to facilitate local production of models from other SAIC Motor brands such as MG and Maxus to meet Indonesian market needs.
In addition, Wuling will implement a Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand regional integration strategy with Indonesia as production hub and market development for ASEAN.
Indonesia will also be developed as a global production base for Wuling right-hand-drive vehicles.
The company plans to expand the NEV ecosystem through partnerships in electronic control systems and charging infrastructure.
Wuling will also introduce artificial intelligence technologies and digital manufacturing systems at Indonesian facilities to improve production efficiency and the supply chain.
To support human resource development, Wuling will collaborate with universities in Guangxi to establish the Wuling China–Indonesia Automotive Institute and training programmes for Indonesian youth.
“At the same time, we hope the Indonesian government will maintain long-term supportive policies for NEVs,” Yao said.
SAIC-GM-Wuling, headquartered in Liuzhou, Guangxi, has recorded total production and sales of more than 31 million vehicles.
In Indonesia, Wuling markets three main EV models namely Air EV, Binguo EV, and Cloud EV. Cumulative sales of the brand in Indonesia have surpassed 100,000 units, with an EV market share of around 41 percent in 2023.
