Guangfu Cultural Exchange Presents Diverse Performances in Indonesia

On 27 August, the ‘From Zhuji Alley to the World’ Guangfu Cultural Exchange Tour held an event in Jakarta, Indonesia. Detailed historical exhibitions, authentic Cantonese opera snippets, and witty Cantonese-language stand-up comedy performances brought together the thousands-of-years-old heritage of Zhuji with the cultural diversity of this archipelago nation. Chinese-Indonesian citizens from various generations were impressed by the event, noting that the activities provided new insights into Cantonese opera while offering a surprising experience through the exploration of the Zhuji Alley heritage.

Zhuji Alley is the ancestral home of the early pioneers from Guangdong. Centuries ago, waves of people from Guangdong left the area and migrated south before crossing the seas to Southeast Asia. They brought the Cantonese language, opera, and folk traditions to this dynamic region, where they eventually settled and established roots.

Huang Xian’an, Secretary-General of the Guangzhao Citizens Association of All Indonesia, stated that many Chinese descendants in Indonesia are of Guangfu descent. However, he noted that the introduction and preservation of Guangfu culture in Indonesia in recent years has not yet received sufficient attention. He assessed that this cultural exchange event arrived at the right momentum and expressed hope that the programme could serve as an opportunity to further introduce and preserve Guangfu culture in Indonesia.
