Growing More Serious, Chery Plans to Inaugurate R&D Centre in Indonesia
Wuhu - Chery plans to establish a research and development (R&D) centre in Indonesia as part of strengthening its long-term strategy in the domestic market.
The presence of this facility is expected to make Chery products increasingly suited to the character and needs of Indonesian consumers, including for its sub-brand iCar, which was recently introduced at the beginning of this year.
“I believe in the near future we will establish an independent R&D Centre in Indonesia. So we are moving quickly, from R&D, manufacturing, to operations,” said President of Chery International, Zhang Guibing, in Wuhu, China, on Tuesday night (28/4/2026).
In addition, the R&D centre is expected to accelerate technological adaptation while supporting the increase in local content in the vehicles produced.
“I think with this approach, overall we are confident in meeting all the provisions or policies implemented by the Indonesian government (including TKDN),” he said.
Previously, the company also announced it would build 26 R&D centres in various countries as part of its strategy to enhance competitiveness in the global automotive arena.
This is aimed at strengthening competitiveness in the local market, ensuring compliance with regulations, and developing products that are more suited to the needs of each region.
Chery’s global innovation network currently includes eight main R&D centres with more than 30,000 research and development personnel, as well as 28 chief scientists.
