Groundbreaking of Bekasi Extension Station: KAI Group Strengthens Access for 12.85 Million Passenger Movements
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has welcomed the start of construction on the Bekasi Extension Station in the Summarecon Bekasi area as part of a Transit Oriented Development (TOD). The development is expected to broaden public access to Bekasi Station, which currently serves long-distance and local train journeys managed by KAI, as well as the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line managed by KAI Commuter.
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono led the groundbreaking ceremony for the Bekasi Extension Station in the Summarecon Bekasi area, West Java, on Friday (24/7/2026). AHY stated that urban development must be oriented towards interconnected transit systems. Integration between public transport, residential areas, economic centres, and public spaces is needed to address increasing urban mobility.
Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana said the construction of the Bekasi Extension Station is a strategic step in developing the railway network and TOD areas. The development is expected to increase service capacity, strengthen intermodal integration, and provide more travel options for the people of Bekasi.
KAI Vice President Corporate Communication Anne Purba explained that the development is significant because Bekasi Station brings together two mobility characteristics in one area: intercity travel using long-distance and local trains, and routine commuter travel using the Greater Jakarta Commuter Line. The station serves a wide variety of travel needs, and the access development is expected to make journeys easier and more connected.
The substantial role of Bekasi Station is evident from KAI Group passenger activity. During the first half of 2026, the station served 12,852,606 passenger movements from long-distance, local, and Commuter Line services. This figure represents an 8.23% increase compared to the 11,875,529 movements recorded in the first half of 2025, an addition of 977,077 passenger movements in a year.
For long-distance and local train services managed by KAI, Bekasi Station served 1,426,728 passenger activities during the first half of 2026, comprising 724,122 boardings and 702,606 alightings. This was an 11.15% increase from the 1,283,590 activities in the same period of 2025. Commuter Line services also saw growth, handling 11,425,878 activities in the first half of 2026, a 7.87% rise from the previous year.
Anne Purba noted that the growth in both services demonstrates the station’s vital function within the KAI Group transport ecosystem, serving as a departure and arrival point for intercity travel while supporting daily mobility in the Greater Jakarta area. The extension is expected to help distribute passenger flow based on direction of arrival, providing closer access for communities in North Bekasi and Summarecon Bekasi. This improved connectivity is also anticipated to reduce reliance on private vehicles, support pedestrian and feeder transport journeys, and alleviate vehicle congestion around the station, while opening opportunities for local businesses and MSMEs.
