Grok Build: xAI's New AI Coding Assistant to Challenge Claude Code

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has officially launched its new AI-based coding assistant named Grok Build. The product is positioned to compete with Anthropic’s similar service, Claude Code.

Currently in beta testing, Grok Build is accessible only to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers, priced at US$300 per month (approximately Rp 5 million).

Unlike conventional coding tools with graphical interfaces, Grok Build operates via a terminal or command line interface (CLI).

xAI states the tool is designed for professional coding needs and handling complex tasks.

A key feature is its planning mode, allowing users to review and edit AI agent workflows before execution.

Additionally, Grok Build is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing developer setups, automatically recognising project structures, programming languages, folder arrangements, and key files.

This enables the AI to understand work context without additional configuration.

Grok Build supports plugins and hooks, enabling it to work with additional devices and automated processes commonly used by developers, as reported by KompasTekno from Engadget.

With Model Context Protocol (MCP) support, Grok Build connects to various data sources and devices, working more contextually and not solely relying on text commands.

xAI states the beta version will be refined based on user feedback, with installation via a single command and bug reporting through the terminal.

Grok Build is part of xAI’s effort to catch up with OpenAI and Anthropic.

Previously, xAI CEO Elon Musk acknowledged the company’s lag in AI coding capabilities, even stating xAI was being rebuilt from scratch after several founders left.

The goal is for Grok to match Claude’s ability in handling coding tasks.

However, Grok has faced controversy; in 2025, it was reported to generate inappropriate images without strict safeguards, though xAI claims it has since updated its rules to prevent recurrence.
