A 14-year-old student from SMPN 33 Gresik is believed to have become a victim of a stray bullet from an Indonesian Navy training exercise on 17 December 2026. However, the victim’s family claims they have not received justice following the incident.

The victim’s mother, Dewi Murniati, recounted that the event occurred while her child was at school. Suddenly, a teacher from the school contacted her, saying her son needed to be rushed to the hospital due to an incident.

“My child entered at 11:00, I only arrived at 13:30. When I arrived, there were representatives from the unit,” she said during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (2/4/2026).

The unit representative, said to be an officer, conveyed an apology. This was because her child was reportedly hit by a stray bullet during a training exercise conducted by the Marine Corps.

“He first offered an apology, and second, confirmed that on that day and at the time of the incident, there was shooting by the Marines,” she said.

According to Dewi, the unit representative asked for the case to be resolved amicably within the family. Moreover, the family was requested not to publicise the case. The unit was said to take full responsibility for the consequences of the incident, including the victim’s treatment.

Dewi admitted to accepting the apology from the unit. However, she said she wanted to focus first on her child’s recovery before discussing responsibility.

Nevertheless, Dewi added that unit representatives had asked the hospital to provide the best care for her child. But in reality, it was not like that.

“Because my child was scheduled for surgery at 19:30, as informed by the hospital, the operation would take about two hours. I took him into the operating room around 19:30 that night, and 35 to 40 minutes later, I was called to the operating room,” she said.
