Police have stated that a grenade found by a scavenger in Tambun Selatan, Bekasi Regency, West Java, on Monday (17/8) was still active.

Tambun Selatan Police Chief, Kompol Wuryanti, said the grenade is suspected to be of British manufacture. The grenade was also still intact despite being in a rusty condition.

“Based on the handling results of the Bomb Disposal Team, the object is a military bomb in the form of a hand grenade with a diameter of approximately 60 mm, a length of 100 mm, a weight of 410 grams, in an active rusty condition, equipped with a safety pin and safety lever, and suspected to be of British manufacture,” said Wuryanti on Tuesday (18/8), as quoted from detik.

Wuryanti further stated that the grenade had been taken to the Gegana Headquarters of the Polda Metro Jaya. It will subsequently be disposed of or destroyed.

“The Polda Metro Jaya Bomb Disposal Team evacuated the object to be taken to the Gegana Headquarters for disposal in accordance with procedure,” said Wuryanti.

Previously, a scavenger found the grenade on Monday (17/8) evening. Wuryanti said that upon receiving the report, officers immediately put up police tape and urged residents to stay away from the discovery site, approximately 50 metres from the crime scene.

“The initial information was received after a scavenger saw a suspicious object, which was then reported by residents to the Tambun Selatan Police,” she said.

Wuryanti urged the public to immediately contact the 110 call centre if they find similar suspicious objects.
