Greenpeace warns against garbage

MANILA (AFP): Global environment watchdog Greenpeace
International warned the Philippine government on Monday against
using incinerators amid a garbage crisis.

"No province or community should serve as a dump site or a
toxic sacrifice zone for the disposal of metro Manila's garbage,"
Greenpeace toxics campaigner in Asia, Von Hernandez, said in a
statement.

"Citizens have every right to oppose plans to convert their
localities into dumps or incinerator sites, especially since both
landfills and incinerators are known to increase rates of cancer
and birth defects in their immediate vicinities," he added.

Manila is currently looking for a new site to dump the
capital's daily garbage, after residents living near a sanitary
landfill in the eastern Manila suburb of Rizal blocked the area
to prevent garbage trucks from entering.
