REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Coal Mining Association (APBI-ICMA) together with SUN has officially launched the Green Mining Innovation Challenge (Greenovation) 2026, a strategic competition initiative in Indonesia’s mining industry designed to accelerate the emergence of low-carbon, more efficient, and globally competitive mining operations.

Gita Mahyarani, Executive Director of APBI-ICMA, explained that as one of the pillars of the national economy, the mining industry plays a vital role in maintaining economic growth, industrial resilience, and Indonesia’s strategic supply chains. Therefore, the transformation of this sector is no longer an option but a necessity to ensure Indonesia’s competitiveness in the future.

She explained that Greenovation serves as a collaborative platform for professionals in the mining sector to bring forth applicable innovations that can address energy challenges, cost efficiency, operational productivity, and global sustainability demands.

According to various studies, the industrial sector, including mineral processing and smelters, is one of the main contributors to national emissions. At the same time, the government continues to promote the agenda of downstreaming, industrialisation, and strengthening national energy resilience. Therefore, the decarbonisation of the mining sector needs to be carried out through realistic, applicable approaches that still maintain productivity.

Greenovation emphasises two of the most strategic transformation areas for the future of Indonesian mining, namely the optimisation of the energy mix and mining operational efficiency. This transformation encourages innovation in the utilisation of renewable energy, fuel efficiency, hybrid systems, and smart energy management systems to reduce energy costs and emissions without disrupting mining operations.

Next is the electrification of vehicles and heavy mining equipment. This approach opens up solutions for fleet and heavy equipment electrification, including implementation strategies, charging infrastructure, and scalable business models for future low-carbon mining operations.

“The coal mining industry has a role in supporting energy resilience, development, and the national economy. Amid changing global landscapes, strengthening competitiveness is something that remains relevant to continue focusing on. We see Greenovation as one space that can encourage the exchange of ideas, technology development, and the emergence of various initiatives from industry players, so that Indonesia’s mining sector can continue to adapt and develop more efficiently going forward,” said Gita.

“In the mining industry, energy is not just an operational need but also a determinant of competitiveness. Through Greenovation, we want to encourage the birth of solutions that can optimise the energy mix and create sustainable cost efficiencies. Going forward, mining companies that can manage energy more intelligently will have a stronger position in facing market dynamics and global industry demands,” stated Emmanuel Jefferson Kuesar, Director of Power, SUN.

Karina Darmawan, Director of Mobility, SUN, explained that through Greenovation, she hopes to encourage the birth of creative and applicable ideas from mining industry practitioners. “Innovations that can support real decarbonisation and have an impact on efficiency without reducing production effectiveness deserve recognition. With Greenovation 2026, it is hoped that new ideas will emerge to support a more sustainable mining industry,” she said.

With a panel of judges from various institutions, government, academia, and the private sector, Greenovation affirms its position as a prestigious innovation arena that brings together the best ideas with the real needs of the industry.

A total prize pool of more than hundreds of millions of rupiah has been prepared. In addition, Gold Winners in each category will receive an exclusive opportunity to visit renewable energy technology innovation centres in China, as a form of appreciation for their contributions in driving a more advanced and sustainable future for Indonesia’s mining sector.

Through Greenovation, APBI-ICMA and SUN hope to encourage the birth of implementable solutions from industry players themselves, while strengthening Indonesia’s steps towards a resilient, modern, low-carbon mining sector ready to meet future challenges.
