Greenland PM Fears Becoming the Next US Target After Venezuela
Moscow (ANTARA) - Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated that the island could potentially become the next target of the United States after Venezuela, following the resurfacing of US President Donald Trump’s desire to take control of Greenland.
“Many people in Greenland think like that, ‘we might be next’, and I know other countries think the same; and that’s very regrettable,” Nielsen told NBC broadcaster on Wednesday (15/4), when asked if he believed Greenland could be the next target.
Nielsen said Trump’s desire to own or control Greenland has caused concern among residents, especially during the latest escalation, to the point where some people hesitate to leave their children at kindergarten and cancel planned parties and meetings.
“Many people feel unsafe. Some feel scared. Now, for many people, that feeling has turned into anger,” Nielsen said.
“If they do something to our infrastructure, then of course we must be prepared,” he emphasised.
Nielsen also expressed uncertainty about whether the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) would defend Greenland if necessary.
“I don’t know if NATO would give guarantees to go to war for us against another ally. We are all still allies,” he said.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the island should join the United States for strategic interests in US national security.
The governments of Denmark and Greenland have warned Washington not to attempt to take over the territory, and have stressed that territorial integrity must be respected.
