Green signal before Argo Bromo Anggrek hit a KRL, Transport Minister: investigation ongoing
JAKARTA — Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi has responded to reports that a green signal was received by the Argo Bromo Anggrek train before it collided with a KRL at Bekasi Timur station. He said he would hand the investigation over entirely to the National Transport Safety Committee (KNKT) for its results and inquiry. ‘We are handing this over to KNKT for their findings and investigation,’ Dudy told reporters at PTIK, Jakarta, on Friday, 22 May 2026. ‘It is still ongoing. There are several aspects we are still examining,’ he added. In addition to KNKT, Dudy said police are also conducting investigations related to the case. ‘Because there were fatalities, the police have already started an inquiry; we are handing that to the police for their investigation,’ he said. In his briefing, KNKT head Soerjanto Tjahjono explained that the collision between KA 5181 Commuter Line and a four-wheeled vehicle at the Bekasi Timur level crossing on the downstream line occurred at 20:48:29 WIB. A few minutes after the incident, precisely at 20:50:43 WIB, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train moved directly onto Track 3 at Bekasi Station with the signal showing a green aspect. ‘The Argo Bromo Anggrek was on Track 3 at Bekasi Station with the J12 outgoing signal showing green or a green aspect,’ Soerjanto told a working hearing with Commission V of the DPR on Thursday, 21 May 2026. ‘So the KNKT’s conclusion at the time of the collision with the car is that after the collision the Argo Bromo Anggrek train moved and collided with the Commuter Line; the signal was green, Sir?’ Lasarus asked. Soerjanto replied that the Argo Bromo Anggrek signal at that time indeed indicated green. ‘The signal was green, Sir,’ he said. ‘Shouldn’t it have been red, Sir, because there was an obstacle ahead?’ Lasarus asked. However, Soerjanto said KNKT had not yet presented analyses or conclusions on the accident’s cause in the briefing. ‘We will explain it later,’ he said.
