Green Shipping Becomes Strategy Towards Net-Zero Emissions
Efforts to transform towards low-emission shipping in Indonesia continue to be strengthened through the Green Shipping 2026 Discussion Forum and Technical Guidance. The event, held on 19 August 2026 in Jakarta, focused on accelerating the decarbonisation of domestic shipping through energy efficiency and the use of low-carbon fuels.
This forum served as a strategic space for stakeholders to formulate concrete steps to support the national decarbonisation agenda. This is in line with the development of the IMO Net-Zero Framework, which requires the global shipping sector to manage emissions in a more structured and measurable manner.
PT BKI (Persero) Director of Classification Business Operations, Arief Budi Permana, emphasised that decarbonisation must be viewed as a transition spectrum. According to him, biodiesel is the most ready short-term option due to infrastructure compatibility, while e-methanol is a promising long-term solution.
“This is where the role of classification becomes important through the preparation of rules, technical studies, and emission verification within the CII, EEXI, and SEEMP frameworks so that the transition proceeds safely and measurably,” said Arief at the forum.
Emission management is now not only focused on the use of fuel on board ships, but also through a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. This method considers emissions throughout the fuel life cycle, from production to distribution, to determine the most appropriate energy choice sustainably.
In addition to fuel, strengthening understanding of the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) is a priority to help industry players measure ship carbon efficiency performance. Accurate data from CII calculations is expected to serve as a basis for improving the operational performance of the domestic fleet.
This forum is also part of the preparation of Indonesia’s domestic shipping decarbonisation roadmap. The preparation of this roadmap requires a strong database and valid calculation methodology as a foundation for future policies and implementation targets.
Through cross-sector collaboration, this activity is expected to produce a common view and increase the technical capacity of participants. The results of the discussion will be documented in the Minutes of Meeting (MoM) as a basis for follow-up towards a greener and more efficient sea transport system.
