The Yogyakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has evacuated a green peafowl in Pajangan, Bantul. The peacock had been roaming around a chicken coop before being captured by residents. BKSDA Yogyakarta spokesperson Desy Rachmawati stated that residents of Pajangan initially discovered the peacock near the chicken coop on Thursday (30/7). Upon discovery, the bird was in a weakened condition and suspected to be suffering from starvation. “Concerned about its condition, the residents then secured the peacock and provided it with food and water,” she said when contacted on Monday (3/8/2026). Following this, the residents reported their finding to BKSDA Yogyakarta. In response to the report, BKSDA Yogyakarta, through the Bantul Regional Conservation Resort, immediately coordinated and deployed a team to the location to evacuate the peacock. “Finally, on Saturday (1/8/2026), BKSDA Yogyakarta evacuated the peacock,” she stated. Examination confirmed the bird is a green peafowl, or Pavo muticus, and is male. “Currently, the green peafowl is at the Bunder Wildlife Protection Unit (UPS) to undergo health checks and care by veterinarians and BKSDA Yogyakarta officers,” she said. The care is intended to ensure the animal recovers before further handling steps are determined. Regarding the peacock’s origin, Desy noted that based on information from residents, the male green peafowl was a wild animal that entered the residential area. “However, to date there is no information indicating that the peacock was a pet or a released animal. Therefore, BKSDA Yogyakarta is continuing observation and further examination to ascertain the animal’s condition,” she said.
