Greater Jakarta Police Share Tips for Public to Prevent Motor Vehicle Theft

Jakarta - Polda Metro Jaya has shared a series of independent anticipatory steps the public can take to secure their vehicles in an effort to suppress crime rates, particularly motor vehicle theft (curanmor).

The Director of General Criminal Investigation at Polda Metro Jaya, Senior Commissioner Iman Imanuddin, urged the public not to rely solely on factory-installed security systems. “Instead, be more proactive in implementing layered security,” he said.

Here are some tips from Polda Metro Jaya for anticipating the crime of motor vehicle theft:

Use Double Security Locks

The public is strongly advised to use additional security tools such as disc locks, chain padlocks, or to install alarms. Do not only rely on the vehicle’s standard handlebar lock.

Lock the Handlebars Pointing to the Right

Parking a motorcycle with the handlebars pointing to the right has proven effective in narrowing the space for perpetrators when trying to break the keyhole with a T-key.

Do Not Leave Keys in the Vehicle

Avoid the negligence of leaving the key attached to the motorcycle or near the vehicle, even if left only briefly, such as when stopping at an ATM or a shop.

Choose a Safe Parking Spot

Always try to park the vehicle in a place that is visible or monitored by CCTV. As much as possible, avoid quiet and dark parking areas.

Keep House Gates Locked

Vigilance must not slacken even when the vehicle is already within the home environment. Ensure house gates are always locked, especially at night or when the house is left empty.

Do Not Store Valuable Documents in the Vehicle

Avoid the habit of storing the Vehicle Registration Certificate (STNK) or the Vehicle Owner’s Book (BPKB) in the motorcycle’s boot or dashboard. This is to prevent perpetrators from misusing these documents if the vehicle is successfully stolen.

Activate Community Security Systems in Residential Areas

The public is invited to revive the community security system (Siskamling). The implementation of a one-gate system at night, along with the re-promotion of the ‘1x24 Hour Mandatory Guest Report’ rule, is considered very effective in narrowing the operational space for criminals.

Iman added that through these preventive measures, Polda Metro Jaya hopes the public can become ‘police for themselves’ so that the room for curanmor perpetrators to operate can be further narrowed.
