Great News! Shopping in Korea Can Now Be Done Using QRIS
Bank Indonesia has officially inaugurated the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) for cross-border use with South Korea. The inauguration was conducted by Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Filianingsih Hendarta and Minister & Deputy Head of Mission at the Korean Embassy in Indonesia, Park Soo-deok. This launch marks that QRIS can now be used as a payment method in South Korea. Similarly, South Korean citizens wishing to transact in Indonesia can do so using QRIS. This was demonstrated by Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Aida S. Budiman, who successfully purchased souvenirs at a shop in Seoul, South Korea, using QRIS. Likewise, Park Soo-deok successfully made a transaction using QRIS in Indonesia. Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Fili stated that the implementation of cross-border QRIS between Indonesia and Korea represents a concrete step in realising Indonesia’s role as a co-creator alongside fellow central banks in the region within a more inclusive and equitable global payment ecosystem. “Indonesia does not only want to be a user or adopter, but also a co-creator alongside fellow central banks in the region within a more inclusive and equitable global payment ecosystem. The implementation of cross-border QRIS between Indonesia and Korea is a concrete step in realising that agenda,” said Fili during her speech at the inauguration of the RI-South Korea cross-border QRIS at Bank Indonesia’s office in Jakarta on Wednesday (1/4/2026). Fili added that the benefits of this QRIS inauguration will open opportunities for the tourism sector, trade, and UMKM to connect with broader markets, including regional and global ones. “Thus, Indonesia continues to strengthen its role in building efficient, inclusive cross-border payment connectivity oriented towards national interests,” she stated. This also represents the strategic partnership between the two countries in building deeper and more relevant digital economic connectivity amid global dynamics. “We hope for support from all stakeholders to continue expanding cross-border QRIS acceptance, particularly at strategic points such as international airports, tourist areas, shopping centres, and locations with high tourist transaction intensity. Joint campaigns at tourist entry and exit points are an important step to increase awareness and usage so that the benefits of this connectivity can be optimally felt by the wider community,” she explained. Besides tourism, strengthening collaboration with industry is also needed to expand merchant coverage, improve service quality, and ensure system reliability and security. Thus, QRIS has developed into the backbone of the national payment system. In addition, QRIS can also drive financial inclusion and strengthen the national economic structure. Meanwhile, at the global level, cross-border QRIS has also become a strategic step to connect Indonesia’s payment ecosystem with partner countries, thereby creating cross-border transactions that are “CEMUMUAH: fast, easy, cheap, secure, and reliable.” For information, cross-border QRIS is currently usable in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea. Soon, QRIS will also be usable in China.
