Police have arrested a 24-year-old man, identified by the initial A alias D, after he murdered his 81-year-old grandmother, identified as K, and a young woman, identified as AA (18), in Patikraja, Banyumas, Central Java. The suspect killed his grandmother because of a dispute over debt.

“The motive is economic. He wanted to seize his grandmother’s belongings and money. Because when he came to ask for money, she refused to give it and instead brought up his debts,” said Banyumas Police Chief, Commissioner Petrus Silalhi, as quoted by detikJateng on Sunday (15/6/2026).

The bodies of K and AA were discovered at K’s residence on Friday (12/6). Commissioner Silalhi stated that the victim, AA, was the suspect’s mistress.

The suspect killed his grandmother on Thursday (11/6) at around 7.30 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. He struck the victim with a hammer, causing her to fall, and then took her life by strangling her with a raffia rope.

“The first to be killed was his grandmother. He struck her neck with a hammer, she fell, and then the perpetrator tied a raffia rope around her neck and strangled her until she died,” he revealed.

Having finished killing his grandmother, the suspect was not satisfied. He then called his mistress with the intention of killing her. To provoke a quarrel, the suspect pretended to see a WhatsApp message notification from another man on the victim’s phone. An argument ensued, which ended in the murder.
