Grandpa held for alleged rape

JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police detained a 65-year-old for allegedly raping an eight-year-old girl at his house on Jl. Kebagusan in Pasar Minggu subdistrict on Sunday afternoon.

Asnawi, who is head of the local neighborhood, said he summoned the suspect, Royani, to his home following a report made by the victim's mother.

"The mother told me that her daughter returned home crying and that she had blood on her underpants. She told her mother what the suspect had done," he said.

"Royani, a grandfather of two, denied raping the child, saying he only sexually harassed her.

"He admitted to promising Lili Rp 2,000 and a bracelet if she agreed to follow him to his house," Asnawi said.

When it was reported that Royani was still at Asnawi's house, hundreds of local residents thronged Royani's house, demanding him to surrender.

"I told them (angry residents) that Royani was transferred to the South Jakarta Police, but they were still waiting there until evening, threatening to burn down the house," he said. (06)
