An elderly man, identified as EF (67), stabbed his ex-wife ES (55) during his child’s wedding reception at Gelanggang Remaja on Sunter Karya Timur Street in Sunter Agung Village, Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, on Saturday, 23 April, in the afternoon. Tanjung Priok Police Station’s Reskrim Unit apprehended the elderly suspect.

‘The motive for this criminal act is suspected to be revenge, but we are still conducting further investigations,’ said Tanjung Priok Police Station Reskrim Unit Head AKP Handam Samudro in Jakarta on Sunday, 24 May.

According to witness statements, Handam explained the incident occurred at 12:00 WIB on Saturday, 23 May. The suspect, who is the ex-husband of the victim, attended the wedding reception of their child at Sunter Karya Timur Street. During a handshake on the reception stage, the suspect suddenly pulled out a knife allegedly prepared in advance. The knife was stored in his bag, and he stabbed his ex-wife once. The victim immediately fell, and building security called the Tanjung Priok Police Station Reskrim duty officer.

‘We promptly arrived at the scene to gather witness statements and other evidence. The suspect faces charges under Article 468 of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP) for premeditated assault, which carries a maximum four-year prison sentence,’ Hamdan stated.

He revealed the suspect had brought a letter written before attending the wedding reception. In the letter, he expressed deep resentment towards his ex-wife regarding issues during their marriage.

‘The suspect had prepared both the letter and knife to attack the victim,’ Handam said.

The victim sustained serious injuries from the stabbing and was rushed to hospital for intensive treatment. Handam confirmed the suspect and evidence have been taken to Tanjung Priok Police Station headquarters in North Jakarta for investigation and case processing.
