Police have disclosed the motive behind the attempted kidnapping of a grandfather, identified by the initials GH (70), in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area of North Jakarta. The perpetrator, a man with the initials CW (31), acted out of resentment because his relationship with the victim’s daughter was not approved.

“It is suspected to be due to a romantic issue or a relationship that was not approved by the victim. Suspect CW, as the mastermind, wanted to take and meet directly with the victim for personal reasons related to CKH, the victim’s daughter, because of the family’s rejection of the relationship,” said Penjaringan Metro Police Chief AKBP Agta Bhuwana Putra to reporters on Monday (15/6/2026).

Agta stated that the victim rejected the relationship because the perpetrator CW already had a child and a wife. The perpetrator then enlisted his acquaintance from the gym, FAP (26), to kidnap the victim.

“Initially, he asked to meet. Since the father found out he had a wife and child, he was cut off. He asked to meet the victim, but was blocked, so he eventually resorted to this desperate act,” he said.

CW told police he intended to kidnap the victim to force a conversation about his relationship with the victim’s daughter. However, the police are not simply accepting this claim and are still conducting further investigation.

“He said he wanted to communicate, but the father is already at that age. His statement is that he wanted to talk, but not like that, not by kidnapping. That is already violence,” he added.

Both perpetrators, CW and FAP, have now been named as suspects and are detained. They are charged under Article 17 and/or Article 18 in conjunction with Article 450 and Article 471 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).

The incident occurred in May 2026, at around 6:55 AM Western Indonesian Time. Based on initial investigations and CCTV footage obtained by investigators, a car was seen following the victim as he was walking to exercise around his residential area. Shortly after, a man got out of the vehicle and directly approached the victim. The perpetrator attempted to force the victim into the car. The victim fought back, saving himself from the kidnapping attempt.

“The perpetrator tried to pull the victim to force him into the car. The victim resisted, so the perpetrator did not succeed in the kidnapping attempt,” explained Penjaringan Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit Head AKP Sampson Sosa Hutapea.

CCTV footage showed the victim and the perpetrator engaged in a struggle. Both were even seen falling onto the road during the tug-of-war. Despite his advanced age, the victim continued to resist and shouted for help. The victim’s screams allegedly caused the perpetrator to panic. The perpetrator ultimately stopped his action and fled the scene before succeeding in taking the victim.
