Gran Max Pick Up Becomes King of Indonesian Roads, BYD Atto 1 'Explodes'
The competitive landscape of Indonesia’s best-selling cars changed in July 2026. The Toyota Kijang Innova, long one of the strongest models, had to relinquish its top position, while the BYD Atto 1 electric car demonstrated its competitiveness by securing second place.
According to wholesale data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), the Daihatsu Gran Max pick-up recorded the highest distribution in July 2026. Factory-to-dealer sales for the commercial vehicle reached 4,449 units.
Rokky Irvayandi, Marketing Director and Corporate Function Director of PT Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM), said the achievement was not due to a sudden sales surge. Gran Max Pick Up (GM PU) sales this year have been relatively consistent, with strong demand in the commercial vehicle segment.
“Regarding GM PU sales, this year GM PU sales have actually been relatively stable in the range of 4,400-4,500 units per month,” Rokky told CNBC Indonesia on Tuesday (18/8/2026).
This indicates strong demand for commercial vehicles amid the recovery of the national automotive market. The Gran Max Pick Up is widely used to support business activities, so its sales movement follows the condition of the commercial sector.
Compared to last year, Gran Max Pick Up sales also recorded significant growth. The increase occurred as the overall commercial vehicle market also experienced growth.
“Compared to last year, there is an increase of around 33% in line with the growth in the commercial segment market,” said Rokky.
Meanwhile, the BYD Atto 1 was right behind with distribution of 4,233 units. This achievement made the Atto 1 the electric car with the highest wholesale sales throughout July.
The Toyota Kijang Innova, which includes the Reborn and Zenix variants, was in third place with 4,176 units.
Below the top three were the Toyota Avanza with 3,511 units, followed by the Suzuki Carry pick-up with 3,282 units. The newcomer Jaecoo J5 also attracted attention after recording distribution of 3,155 units and entering the top six best-selling cars nationally.
The Daihatsu Sigra was in seventh place with 3,092 units. Next, the Mitsubishi Xpander, including the Xpander Cross, recorded 2,743 units, followed by the Gran Max minibus and blind van with 2,726 units. The Toyota Rush completed the top ten with 2,548 units.
Overall, the national car market showed recovery in July 2026. Wholesale sales reached 81,115 units, up 4.5% compared to June 2026’s 77,603 units.
Compared to July 2025, the jump was even higher. Wholesale sales in July this year grew 33.3% from 60,837 units in the same period last year.
Positive performance was also seen in retail sales. Dealers recorded sales of 77,412 units to consumers throughout July 2026, an increase of 3.6% compared to June’s 74,758 units.
Compared to July 2025, retail growth even reached 23.1%, from 62,889 units to 77,412 units.
With the additional sales in July, the performance of the national automotive market in the first seven months of 2026 also strengthened. January-July wholesales were recorded at 517,742 units, an increase of 18.3% compared to the same period the previous year of 437,544 units.
Meanwhile, retail sales throughout January-July 2026 reached 511,514 units. This figure grew 12.3% compared to the same period in 2025, which reached 455,667 units.
The change in position among the best-selling cars also shows the increasingly diverse choices of Indonesian consumers. Commercial vehicles such as the Gran Max and Carry still have a strong market, while electric models such as the BYD Atto 1 are beginning to compete directly with conventional vehicles that have dominated the market for years.
