Grab Targets Threefold Increase in Electric Vehicle Fleet by End of 2026
The acceleration of the transition towards electric vehicles continues to be a primary focus for both the Indonesian government and transport industry players. In an effort to increase national energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, mobility service providers are expanding investments in electric vehicles while introducing services that encourage more energy-efficient daily activities.
Grab Indonesia, currently the largest electric vehicle (EV) operator in Indonesia, aims to increase the number of EV fleets operating on its platform by more than three times by the end of 2026 compared to the previous year. This commitment was announced alongside the launch of the ‘Grab Green Steps for Indonesia’ movement, which encourages the public to adopt wiser energy usage through transport, food delivery, and parcel delivery services.
The launch of this commitment was attended by the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY).
According to Grab, this move aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive to strengthen national energy sovereignty and independence by increasing efficiency and accelerating the transition to clean energy to support the Net Zero Emissions target by 2060 or sooner.
In his speech, AHY stated that accelerating the energy transition requires collaboration between the government, the private sector, and the community, including driver-partners who are part of the public mobility system every day. “For us, an energy transition that embraces the community requires the participation of all parties, including the private sector and mobility actors on the ground. Therefore, I appreciate Grab’s Driver-Partners who have become part of the movement towards more environmentally friendly transportation. Grab’s commitment to expanding its EV fleet through ‘Green Steps for Indonesia’ demonstrates how innovation can help the public switch to more efficient energy consumption patterns. This step is in line with the target for developing the national EV ecosystem, while also supporting Indonesia’s efforts towards Net Zero Emissions by 2060 or sooner,” said AHY.
He added that collaboration between the government, the business world, and the community is key to accelerating the transition to a green economy. In his view, the adoption of electric vehicles not only contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions but also supports improved air quality, public health, and inclusive, sustainable development.
“Initiatives like Grab’s Green Steps for Indonesia show that innovation, when implemented alongside the community, can be part of the solution to drive energy efficiency and sustainable economic growth in Indonesia,” he said.
CEO of Grab Indonesia, Neneng Goenadi, stated that as of May 2026, the number of electric vehicle fleets operating through the Grab platform has exceeded 28,000 units, representing a twofold increase compared to the previous year. By the end of 2026, Grab targets this number to increase more than threefold.
“We believe technology can help the public make smarter and more sustainable choices in their daily activities. As the largest EV fleet operator in Indonesia, as of May 2026, Grab’s EV fleet has reached over 28,000 units, or double compared to last year. By the end of 2026, we are committed to continuing to increase the number of EV fleets to more than three times that of the previous year,” said Neneng.
According to Neneng, this target will be supported through increased investment in two-wheeled and four-wheeled electric vehicles, partnerships with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), the development of charging infrastructure, and various acceleration programmes for driver-partners.
Grab also believes that government support for the energy transition serves as a vital driver for expanding accessible low-emission mobility solutions. Through the development of EV fleets, energy-saving features, and support for driver-partners, the company aims to ensure that sustainability is not just a corporate commitment, but also a part of the public’s daily choices.
As part of this commitment, Grab launched the ‘Green Steps for Indonesia’ movement under the message ‘Be Wiser, Save Fuel with Grab’ through the #KitaBijakBBM campaign. This initiative invites the public to contribute to energy efficiency through the services used daily, while also supporting the national energy independence agenda and the momentum leading up to Global Energy Independence Day on 10 July.
The movement is realised through three service categories. In the Smart Mobility sector, users can choose GrabCar Electric and GrabBike Electric. Grab also introduced the Group Ride feature, first introduced in GrabX 2026, allowing several users to share a journey to the same or nearby destinations to increase energy efficiency. Additionally, GrabCar Hemat offers more affordable rates through more optimal route matching.
In the Efficient Cravings category, Grab presents GrabFood Group Order, which allows office or family orders to be combined into a single delivery. Meanwhile, GrabFood Hemat and GrabFood Nearby Delivery help optimise deliveries from the nearest merchants so that travel time and energy consumption become more efficient.
Through the Mindful Deliveries category, Grab presents GrabMart Nearby, which prioritises fulfilling daily needs from the nearest stores, as well as GrabExpress Instant Hemat, which offers more efficient delivery routes and is marked with a ‘Fuel Saving Choice’ label in the application.
