Grab Introduces Carri, an Autonomous Delivery Robot

At the GrabX 2026 event held in the Sudirman area of Jakarta (8/4), Grab made a major breakthrough by introducing an autonomous delivery robot named “Carri”. Internal Grab data shows that driver partners lose around 10% of their productive time just searching for restaurant locations in large malls or waiting for customers to descend from tall office buildings. With Carri, the robot can handle that waiting time, collect orders from restaurants, and hand them over to drivers. Anthony Tan, Group CEO and Co-Founder of Grab, emphasised, “If this little friend can handle that waiting time by finding the restaurant and then handing the order to the driver, it allows our drivers to move on to the next job much faster.” The main advantage that distinguishes Carri from typical indoor robots is its ability to operate smoothly in both indoor and outdoor environments. While other robots are usually limited to areas inside hotels or malls, Carri can navigate outdoor terrain, including handling road inclines of up to 15-20 degrees. The robot demonstrates full autonomy without human control. Carri can automatically learn the locations of drivers and customers and move autonomously to complete its missions. From a technical standpoint, Carri is equipped with robust battery life, claimed to operate for several hours up to a full day. Although technologically Carri can cover long distances, its operations are currently limited to certain zones due to regulations in various countries that do not yet fully permit robots to operate on open roads. Anthony Tan stated that realising technology in physical form like Carri opens new opportunities. However, he emphasised that Carri is not intended to replace driver partners, but rather as a support tool. This is expected to help Grab’s partners through the time and energy efficiency offered by the latest artificial intelligence technology.
