Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - Founder of SoftBank Group, Masayoshi Son, is increasingly ambitious in expanding investments in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Son is reportedly planning to pour US$100 billion, or approximately Rp1.75 quadrillion, into France, including building a massive AI infrastructure worth billions of US dollars, according to a Bloomberg report.

Global technology giants have already allocated huge funds to build data centres that form the backbone of AI services. OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank previously announced plans to build five data centres in the US worth US$500 billion through a project named Stargate.

Son is said to hold a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron in the coming weeks regarding the massive AI data centre project in France. This was revealed by several sources familiar with the plans.

Sources added that the project is planned to be announced at the Choose France Summit on 19 May 2026.

Bloomberg reported that details of the project are still unclear. The potential and scale of the investment could also change.

Reuters could not verify the report. SoftBank did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment.

SoftBank is also known as one of the major investors in the Indonesian online transportation giants Gojek and Grab. Lately, SoftBank has been more aggressively investing in AI projects.

SoftBank’s other AI sector investments include US$30 billion funding in OpenAI, which gives the company 11% ownership of the ChatGPT producer. SoftBank also invested in robotics business ABB and digital infrastructure investment firm DigitalBridge.
