Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - SoftBank is reported to have secured a short-term loan of US$40 billion (Rp 679 trillion). The debt will be used, among other things, by the Grab and Gojek investor to strengthen its portfolio in the field of AI. One of the key uses is to bolster the Japanese company’s investment in the US-based AI giant, OpenAI. The funds will also be used for general corporate purposes. The loan is unsecured and will mature in March 2027, as cited from Reuters on Monday (30/3/2026). Several companies providing the loan include JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Mizuho Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp, and MUFG Bank. The relationship between SoftBank and the maker of ChatGPT has grown closer in recent times. This is because there is currently a race to maintain a lead in the field of generative AI. Reuters notes that the loan highlights the bet by founder Masayoshi Son on the AI industry. Previously, SoftBank has spent a lot of money in this market, but sometimes incurred large losses from the Vision Fund. Earlier, SoftBank was known to plan a US$30 billion (Rp 509.8 trillion) investment in OpenAI through its Vision Fund-2 unit. Both SoftBank and OpenAI are part of last year’s Stargate Project. That project aims to invest up to US$500 billion over four years in building AI infrastructure in the United States. SoftBank has also announced it will invest US$100 billion (Rp 1,699 trillion) in 2024. Those funds are intended for AI and related infrastructure over the same period.
