Grab-Gojek Commission Cut to 8%, but Drivers Fear Fare Hikes Will Deter Passengers

Ride-hailing platforms Gojek and Grab have reduced their commission fees for drivers from 20% to 8% starting 1 July 2026. However, a driver interviewed by CNBC Indonesia expressed concern rather than enthusiasm, stating that his earnings had not improved. He noted that while the subscription fee for the ‘hemat’ (budget) service option had been removed, the passenger fare for the same service had increased. The driver observed that a trip which previously cost passengers Rp 12,100 was now priced at Rp 11,400, but other journey prices had risen from Rp 23,000 to Rp 26,000. He feared the higher fares would reduce the number of passengers, ultimately lowering his income. He explained that he preferred the budget service option because it was much easier to get passengers, and he was worried that the price increase would drive customers away.
